Uncategorized Transactions
What are uncategorized transactions?
Uncategorized transactions are imported bank or credit card transactions that have not been assigned to an expense or income category. They sit in a holding area, often called the bank feed or for review queue, until someone categorizes them. Uncategorized transactions prevent accurate financial reporting because revenue and expenses are understated until categorization is complete.
Why transactions go uncategorized
New vendors without categorization rules create uncategorized transactions. Unusual descriptions that do not match existing rules fall through. Transactions from unfamiliar sources need manual review. Sometimes the person doing bookkeeping is unsure which category applies and leaves it for later. Whatever the cause, the transactions need attention.
Clearing the backlog
Set a regular schedule to review and categorize pending transactions, ideally weekly or at least before closing each month. Create rules as you categorize to reduce future manual work. If you cannot determine the correct category, flag the transaction for follow-up rather than guessing. Persistent uncategorized balances indicate process problems that need addressing.
