Due to Related Party

What is due to related party?

Due to related party is a liability account showing amounts your business owes to related parties such as owners, affiliated companies, or family members. When an owner pays business expenses personally or loans money to the company, the obligation appears here. This account tracks what the business must repay, keeping personal and business finances properly separated.

Common scenarios creating this liability

An owner uses a personal credit card for business expenses. The owner makes a cash loan to cover payroll. A parent company pays expenses on behalf of a subsidiary. In each case, the business incurs an obligation to repay. Recording these properly prevents confusion about who owes what and maintains clean books for tax and legal purposes.

Managing related party balances

Document all related party transactions with notes explaining the nature and terms. Settle balances periodically rather than letting them accumulate indefinitely. For loans, have written agreements specifying repayment terms and interest rates at or above the applicable federal rate. Large or long-standing related party balances invite IRS scrutiny.
