Due from Related Party

What is due from related party?

Due from related party is an asset account showing amounts owed to your business by related parties such as owners, affiliated companies, or family members. When the business pays personal expenses for an owner or loans money to an affiliate, the receivable appears here. This account tracks what related parties must repay to the business.

Why tracking matters

Untracked advances to owners may be recharacterized as distributions or compensation with different tax treatment. Loans to related parties without proper documentation can be treated as gifts. For S corporations, amounts due from shareholders affect stock basis calculations. Clean records protect everyone involved and satisfy tax reporting requirements.

Collecting related party receivables

Establish repayment expectations when amounts are advanced. For loans, charge interest at applicable federal rates and document payments. For expense reimbursements, process repayment promptly. Letting balances grow creates problems. Large due from shareholder balances on S corporation books can trigger taxable distribution treatment even without actual cash payment.
