Year-over-Year (YoY) Growth

What is year-over-year?

Year-over-year growth compares a metric (typically revenue or profit) against the same period in the prior year, eliminating seasonal variations that affect month-to-month comparisons. For consulting firms, YoY growth provides the clearest picture of the trajectory, as it compares January to January rather than January to December. This metric is essential for board reporting, investor communications, and strategic planning.

Key characteristics

  • Compares the same period (month, quarter) against the prior year

  • Eliminates seasonal variations in business patterns

  • Applied to revenue, profit, client count, or any periodic metric

  • Standard reporting format for boards and investors

  • More meaningful than sequential (month-to-month) comparisons

  • Calculated as (current period - same period last year) ÷ same period the previous year × 100

Why it matters for service firms

YoY comparisons reveal an accurate business trajectory by eliminating seasonal noise. Many consulting firms experience Q4 budget-flush revenue spikes or January slowdowns. A firm showing +15% January vs December might actually be down YoY if last January was stronger. For strategic decision-making, YoY trends matter more than short-term fluctuations. Tracking YoY growth monthly creates an early warning of trajectory changes and enables timely corrective action.

Real-world example

Altitude Consulting reviews Q1 performance: $420,000 revenue, up 12% from Q4's $375,000. Leadership initially celebrates the growth. However, YoY analysis reveals: Q1 this year: $420,000 vs. Q1 last year: $460,000, a -9% YoY decline. The sequential improvement masked a declining trajectory stemming from the loss of two key clients in Q4. This insight shifts the conversation from celebration to concern. The firm accelerates business development and implements client retention initiatives. By Q3, the YoY comparison turns positive again to +7%, confirming that the corrective actions worked.
