Matter Profitability
What is matter profitability?
Matter profitability measures whether a specific client engagement made or lost money. It compares the revenue collected to the fully loaded cost of delivering the work, including direct labor, overhead allocation, and any write-offs. Understanding matter profitability helps you identify which work is worth pursuing and which types of engagements erode margins despite appearing busy.
Calculating matter profitability
Start with collected revenue, not billed amounts. Subtract the cost of professional time based on loaded rates that include salary, benefits, and overhead. Add direct expenses. Some firms use simplified cost models; others allocate costs precisely. The goal is consistent measurement that allows comparison across matters. Track profitability by matter type, client, and timekeeper to spot patterns.
Acting on profitability insights
Low profitability matters signal pricing problems, scope issues, or efficiency gaps. Analyze what went wrong. Did you underestimate scope? Did the client demand excessive revisions? Did junior staff work inefficiently? Use these insights to improve pricing, scope definition, or staffing for similar future matters. Some unprofitable work may be strategically valuable, but make that choice deliberately.
