Executive Summary
What is an executive summary?
An executive summary is a brief overview of a longer document or report, designed for readers who need key information without reading the full content. In financial reporting, executive summaries highlight critical metrics, significant variances, and recommended actions. They answer the question: what do I need to know, and what should I do about it?
Writing effective executive summaries
Lead with conclusions and recommendations, not background. State the most important finding first. Quantify wherever possible. If revenue is up, say by how much. If a problem exists, name it specifically. Keep summaries to one page or less. Busy executives decide whether to read further based on what the summary reveals. Front-load the value.
Executive summary vs introduction
An introduction sets up a document. An executive summary could replace it for a reader short on time. The summary stands alone. Someone reading only the summary should understand the situation, the analysis, and the recommended action. Test your summary by asking whether it makes sense without the supporting detail. If not, it is an introduction, not a summary.
