Processing Fee
What is a processing fee?
A processing fee is any charge for handling a transaction, commonly applied to payment processing, payroll services, and financial transactions. Payment processors charge per-transaction fees. Payroll services charge per-employee or per-check fees. Banks charge wire transfer and ACH fees. These fees are normal costs of business operations that should be budgeted and tracked.
Common processing fees in service businesses
Credit card processing fees typically run 2% to 3% per transaction. Payroll processing costs $4 to $10 per employee per pay period plus base fees. ACH transfers may cost $0.25 to $1.50 each. Wire transfers range from $15 to $50. Invoice factoring or financing carries fees of 1% to 5%. Add these costs when evaluating service providers and pricing your own services.
Reducing processing costs
Negotiate rates as your volume grows. Compare providers annually. Consider whether convenience justifies premium pricing. For payment processing, understand which transaction types cost more and adjust practices accordingly. For payroll, evaluate whether additional features justify higher per-employee costs. Small percentage differences compound significantly over time.
