Flash Report
What is a flash report?
A flash report is a preliminary financial summary produced within days of the month-end, before the formal close is complete. It provides key metrics like revenue, major expenses, and cash position using estimates where final numbers are not yet available. Flash reports give leadership early visibility into performance when decisions cannot wait for the full close process.
Speed over precision
Flash reports sacrifice accuracy for speed. Revenue might be within 5% of the final. Some expenses are estimated. The goal is directional correctness, not precision. A flash report showing revenue down 15% triggers immediate conversation even if the final number lands at 13% or 17%.
What belongs in a flash report
Keep it focused on revenue vs. target, cash position, AR aging summary, major expense categories, and any red flags. One page maximum. Executives need signals, not details. If something looks wrong, they will ask questions.
