Accounts Payable Turnover

What is accounts payable turnover?

Accounts payable turnover is a financial ratio measuring how quickly a company pays its suppliers, calculated by dividing total purchases or cost of goods sold by average accounts payable. For professional service firms, this ratio indicates payment efficiency and cash management practices. A higher turnover means faster payment to vendors; a lower turnover indicates the firm is taking longer to pay, which may preserve cash but could strain vendor relationships.

Key characteristics

  • Measures the speed of vendor payments

  • Calculated as purchases divided by the average AP

  • A higher ratio means faster payment to vendors

  • A lower ratio indicates extended payment timing

  • Should be balanced against vendor relationship needs

  • Benchmark against industry and payment terms offered

Why it matters for professional service firms

AP turnover reveals payment behavior and cash management strategy. A firm paying vendors very quickly (high turnover) may be missing opportunities to use that cash productively. A firm paying very slowly (low turnover) preserves cash but risks vendor relationships and potential late fees. Professional service firms should track AP turnover to ensure payment timing aligns with strategy: paying within terms to maintain relationships while not paying faster than necessary.

Real-world example

Rachel's consulting firm had AP turnover of 18 (paying vendors every 20 days on average) while terms were typically Net 30. Analysis showed the firm was paying 10 days early on average, tying up approximately $35K in unnecessary early payments. Adjusting to pay at terms (not late, but not early) reduced AP turnover to 12, freeing $35K in working capital without damaging any vendor relationships. The firm now pays strategically: early only for discounts that exceed the cost of capital, otherwise at terms.
